The primary agricultural produce of Annan District are mainly sugar cane and corn. In recent years, local farmers have also been growing cantaloupes and cherry tomatoes. The region is also known for its red-fleshed dragon fruit (red-fleshed pitaya). The fishery industry in this area is divided into "offshore fishery" and "aquaculture". There are two fishing ports for the offshore fishery, one is "Lu’ermen Fishing Harbor" and the other is "Siwubao Fishing Harbor", while aquaculture is mainly carried out in fish ponds, which are mainly located in the areas of Sicao, Hsien Kung, Tucheng, and Xuejialiao. The area is rich in the production of tiger shrimp, milkfish and grouper. In cooperation with the local farmers’ and fishermen's associations, premium products are developed and mechanization promoted to save labor and reduce costs, prevent and reduce diseases and pests to increase production. Joint transportation and marketing of products are initiated to cut out middlemen and increase efficiency. Family handicrafts and side businesses are also encouraged. Plant varieties and technology are improved along with transformation of business practices to increase income and improve quality of life. Tainan Technology Industrial Park: Located on both sides of the Lu’ermen River, the 709-hectare park is an intelligent industrial base. The industries planned to be introduced include telecommunications, IT, software development, consumer electronics, semiconductors, precision machinery, automation, aerospace, advanced materials, specialty chemicals, pharmaceuticals, life sciences, biological, health care, pollution control, and optoelectronic industries. The industrial zone features convenient transport access (adjacent to Provincial Highway 17 and linked to National Highway No.1,No.2 , and Taiwan Provincial Highway No. 1 via National Highway 8), comprehensive public facilities, abundant human resources, and quality living environment. The park combines production, ecology, and living in the same industrial zone, which will create more employment opportunities once development is completed.

Agricultural specialties (1) cherry tomatoes
Cherry tomatoes are highly adaptable to most types of soil and can be cultivated everywhere, but the soil in this region is mostly slightly alkaline or alkaline, which produces tomatoes with crisp flesh, good flavor, and great taste. The annual cultivation area is more than 50 hectares, and the varieties grown are Tainan ASVEG No. 11 and cherry tomatoes. Grown year-round except during typhoons.
Cultivation method: Open-field and greenhouse facilities.
Selection criteria: fruit stalks are fresh, colors are desired, with plump and smooth-tasting flesh.

Agricultural Specialties (2) cantaloupes
The soil and climate of the region are suitable for the growth of cantaloupes, and the sweetness, quality and flavor are excellent, making its cultivation popular among local farmers. The cultivation area has increased year by year, reaching more than 800 hectares per year, and it has gradually become a major economic crop in the region.
For many years, the traditional open-field cultivation was susceptible to crop barriers, pests and disease hazards, especially melon viruses, which almost caused a cultivation crisis in our region. Fortunately, the Tainan District Agricultural Research and Extension Station provided a timely recommendation to use silver and black plastic tarps on the cultivation areas to control aphids as a vector. In 1989, cantaloupes were successfully cultivated with simple tunnel type plastic sheeting, which has numerous advantages, such as keeping temperature, improving quality, reducing pests, diseases and weeds, and allowing early harvesting for better profitability. Therefore, the cultivation of cantaloupes in the local area has been improved through years of experience and improvements in production and techniques, from open field cultivation to tunnel cultivation.

Cultivation method: Tunnel-type plastic sheet and greenhouse facilities cultivation.
Selection tips: Webbed melons with prominent reticulation and strong aroma is desired. Melons with a strong creamy fragrance is best. Honeydew melons feature a white jade color and transparent texture, fruits with sparse reticulation are better.
When to enjoy: When harvested, the flesh is slightly coarse and hard. It is recommended to enjoy as soon as possible. After keeping for 3-5 days of ripening, the flesh softens and have better flavors.
